“German Scientists Uncover Surprising Trends in English Song Lyrics: Complexity Soars and Genres Diverge”

The German scientists of the Newberg Music Conservatory have analyzed over 12,000 English-language song lyrics released between 1980 and 2020. In a study published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports (SciRep), the researchers found that over the past four decades, musical compositions have become clearer and more sophisticated in terms of lyrical complexity, thanks to increased use of literary devices and multiple repetitions.

The experts examined lyrics from various genres including rap, pop, country, rhythm and blues (RnB), and rock. Each genre comprised approximately 2,400 songs. According to their analysis, the overall complexity of song lyrics has grown. The textual content of musical compositions has become more personal and profound over time.

In genres like rap and hip-hop, the authors have started expressing themselves more positively and incorporating negative words and contradictions. In pop, country, and RnB music, there has been an increase in the use of negative words. Additionally, ambiguous words have become more prominent in all genres, except for rock music, where explicit words are still more prevalent.

Furthermore, the researchers discovered that rock music enthusiasts tend to favor classic songs from the genre, showing more affection towards them. On the other hand, fans of country music are more interested in newer performers within the genre.
