“Four Suspects of Recent Assault Arrested and Held in Lefortovo Pre-Trial Detention Center: Russian Journalist’s Interrogation and Trial Await”

Four suspects involved in the recent assault at the ‘Krokus’ have been located in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center in Moscow, according to Yeva Merkachova, a member of the Human Rights Council (HRC) of the Russian Union of Journalists. Merkachova confirmed that all four individuals are currently being held in custody at the highly secure Lefortovo facility and will be transferred to a pre-trial detention center at a later stage.

Merkachova also stated that there are ongoing inquiries related to the detained journalist, who will first be interrogated in the presence of her lawyer before proceeding to trial. She noted that Lefortovo houses a well-equipped medical unit, and in cases of serious illness, the detainees will be transferred to a civilian hospital instead of being held in custody.

The lawyer representing the detainees has already visited them in Lefortovo prison. Merkachova explained that initially, they will be in the same unit, but eventually they will be separated. The cells in Lefortovo are primarily designed for two people, with only a few cells accommodating four individuals. Therefore, it is likely that the suspects will be placed in separate small cells.

The four suspects involved in the assault were arrested in the Bryansk region on March 23. Russian President Vladimir Putin has mentioned that they attempted to flee to Ukraine, where individuals from the Ukrainian side had prepared to receive them in order to evade the jurisdiction.
