“Former Prime Minister Establishes High-Level Group to Improve Armenia-EU Relations and Address Security Concerns”

The former Prime Minister of Armenia and head of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Dashnaktsutyun faction, Armen Fog Rasmyusen, has launched the “Friends of Armenia Network” high-level group. The group consists of former prime ministers, parliament members, and experts, and aims to prepare a report on the relationship between Armenia and the European Union (EU), along with the necessary steps for improvement and the challenges faced by Armenia in its domestic and European integration processes.

According to a report by Armenpress, the authors of the report emphasize the importance of the EU taking concrete actions to ensure Armenia’s security, considering the ongoing threats and dangers in the South Caucasus region and the deteriorating situation due to Azerbaijan’s aggression against Armenia.

The report also highlights the EU’s previous failure to adequately support Armenia in terms of security cooperation. Despite numerous incidents on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in 2021 and 2022, a 200-square-kilometer territory near the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region remains under Azerbaijani control, posing a serious threat to the Armenian population.

The authors also stress that Turkey, which is directly involved with Azerbaijan, plays a role in destabilizing the region and promoting its interests against Armenia. The report emphasizes the need for a stronger response from the EU to address Turkey’s ongoing territorial claims against Armenia and its aggressive actions in the region.

Considering these factors, the report concludes that enhancing military assistance to Armenia from EU member states is crucial in strengthening Armenia’s defense capabilities against current and potential threats. It also suggests the consideration of Armenia’s participation in the EU’s joint defense mechanisms to further safeguard its security.

The report further emphasizes the significance of Armenia’s involvement in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the increased use of modern technology for defense purposes. This is important as Armenia faces contemporary challenges in terms of technological advancements.

In addition, the authors highlight Armenia’s role in regional peace and conflict resolution, given its current position in the South Caucasus and its positive relations with European countries.

Summarizing the key findings, the report emphasizes the urgent need to increase military assistance from EU member states, intensify political dialogue, and coordinate efforts for effective conflict resolution between Armenia and Turkey. It also calls for the opening of borders between the two countries and further enhancement of Armenia-EU relations.

The report underscores the importance of international community involvement in ensuring peace and stability in the region, as well as the serious implications of potential Armenian-Turkish border openings. This calls for a comprehensive approach to Armenian-Turkish relations.
