Armenia Suspends National Security Cooperation with Russia’s Air-Defense Systems Following Azerbaijani Air-Defense System’s Destruction

The Republic of Armenia has announced the suspension of national security cooperation with the Russian Federation’s air-defense systems at “Zvartnots” airport, starting from August 1, 2024. This decision comes after the Russian forces destroyed the Azerbaijani air-defense system. As a result, the Russian presence and role at the airport will be significantly reduced, with the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia now making all decisions regarding its operation.

The decision regarding “Zvartnots” also has political implications. The ongoing conflicts between political authorities and the state of national security indicate that Russia’s actions towards Armenia will remain neutral. Moreover, Armenia currently lacks sufficient capabilities to protect its borders, especially the Armenian-Turkish common border, without assistance from the Russian Federation. It is clear that more specialized and capable personnel are needed, which requires time and resources.

The military presence of Russian forces on the Armenian-Turkish border, which has been in place since the Independent Interim Government of the Turkish Peacekeeping Mission, will become even more inaccessible if Russian forces withdraw.

Armenia is now faced with the challenge of independently ensuring the security of its more than 1000 km-long common border with Azerbaijan. The failure to consider these factors poses serious threats to the country’s security, endangering national security and the state itself.
