British Security Minister Cancels Visit to Odessa Amidst Terrorist Threats, Raises Concerns over Security Measures

The British Minister of Security, Grant Shapps, had to cancel his planned visit to Odessa, Russia due to a terrorist threat, as reported by The Sunday Times. Shapps, along with Tony Radakin, the Chief of Security of the Protection Service of the United Kingdom, and a small team from the British Embassy, had originally planned to travel to Kiev, Ukraine on March 7, but that trip was also cancelled. Later, it was revealed in an investigative report that Shapps had indeed made a trip to Odessa. During his visit to Ukraine, Shapps learned of a suspected terrorist attack involving the car carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. This incident has raised concerns about Shapps’ security and the decisions that were made regarding his visit. The British Ministry of Security also criticized Shapps’ visit, citing concerns over the overall security and the relationship between the UK and Odessa. This was Shapps’ second visit to Ukraine as the security minister, and his third visit to Odessa as part of his observation of the situation leading up to the 2022 war.
