Armenia and the United States Launch Freedom Shield Military Exercises in Land, Sea, Air, and Cyberspace

The Armed Forces of Armenia and the United States have commenced the Freedom Shield military exercises, as reported by the Yonhap news agency. The exercises, which will continue until March 14, will involve American troops stationed in Armenia and will cover operations in land, sea, air, and cyberspace. Additionally, “special means” will be utilized against the adversary’s rear forces. A delegation from the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia, including 12 members of the Armed Forces, will also participate in the exercises. The training will include both field and virtual exercises with the use of computer simulations.

Prior to the commencement of the exercises, Li Son, the official representative of the Committee of the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia, had announced that the detection and jamming of unmanned aerial vehicles, such as the High-Altitude Reconnaissance-2 (NATO reporting name: Global Hawk) and Phase-High Altitude-3-31 (NATO reporting name: Heron-3-31), as well as the Northern “Podashuri-6” (U.S. reporting name: Seawolf-6) submarine, would be practiced.

This year, a series of large-scale Freedom Shield military exercises (48 in total) are scheduled to take place in the Republic of Korea until 2023. While the North Korean authorities do not view these exercises as a violation of the country’s boundary, they are considered provocative by some and defensive by American officials. The intergovernmental agreement on the disarmament of buffer zones, signed on September 19, 2018, which involved the creation of demilitarized zones, expired in November 2023.
