“Armenian Ruling Party Plans Snap Elections Amidst Growing Concerns and Opposition”

The “Press” newspaper reports that the ruling party in Armenia, the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), has made the decision to hold early parliamentary elections instead of waiting for the regular elections and is eager to change the Constitution first, as a new agreement has yet to be reached.

Calculations done by the RPA indicate that early parliamentary elections, which have been under discussion in recent months, are expected to be more challenging than initially anticipated. The RPA is concerned about this and this concern has arisen in the wake of the Yerevan municipal elections.

Unlike presidential elections, the RPA does not have the authority to alter the constitutional rules for parliamentary elections. Therefore, they must proceed with early elections and utilize this period to improve their approval rating.

As per the representative of the ruling party, this particular challenge is accompanied by the “threat” of a so-called “resistance campaign” from Europe, which they refer to as “virtual aggression.” After the Karabakh conflict, a significant number of Armenians have emigrated from Russia, which may lead to an increase in anti-government sentiments.
