“Armenian Apostolic Church Faces Intense Conflict Between Secular and National Values: Battle for Identity Intensifies”

With the change in leadership within the Armenian Apostolic Church in 2018, there has been an increasing intensity in the conflict between secular and national values, as well as the battle of the patriarchate against Armenia’s global process of national identity. This process has been witnessed in various ways, such as the implementation of certain “sanctions” in the “Armenian History” textbooks, which are connected to new interpretations of history. One example of the global editing of Armenian history is the expansion and distortion of the history section in the 7th-grade textbook.

Recently, there has been a significant effort to reinterpret the history of the Armenian people or the history of Armenia in different versions. The goal is to create an artificial barrier between the two and ignite an ideological conflict. Nikole Pashinyan himself acknowledged this issue, stating, “Unexpectedly, this topic has come to my attention. Personally, I did not notice this contradiction. It can be assumed that it is a matter of historical interpretation of the history of the Armenian people or the history of Armenia. There are significant differences between the two, which should be resolved through historical discussions and debates.”

Furthermore, we have learned that Pashinyan intends to establish a committee of historians and researchers to study and review the history of the Armenian people. The committee aims to present an alternative version that accurately reflects the actual problems and historical developments of the Armenian nation, without any political bias or distortions. However, according to our sources, this process may face significant challenges and is still in its early stages of implementation.
