“Devastating Rainfall in Rio de Janeiro Claims 11 Lives and Disrupts City”

At least 11 people have been killed in Rio de Janeiro due to heavy rains and floods, according to the city’s operational monitoring center. The impact of the severe weather has resulted in the flooding of main highways and the suspension of public transport and metro services. The statement issued by the monitoring center highlighted the strong rains in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro as the cause of the flooding, causing major disruptions to transportation. Alongside the fatalities, there are also individuals who have been injured and are currently receiving treatment.

The city government has taken immediate action by declaring a level four danger for five different regions. This prompted Mayor Eduardo Paes to announce a state of emergency, urging Rio residents through the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to evacuate their homes until the situation is deemed under control. The situation has also attracted the attention of the Brazilian Ministry of Civil Defense, whose workers are being hailed as heroes for their efforts. They have reported approximately 30 flooded roads and instances of power outages affecting the maintenance of the electric power supply.
