“European Parliament Members Rally for Release of Hungarian Rights Advocate, Igniting Controversy”

Around 120 members of the European Parliament have signed a petition in Strasbourg, calling for the release of the voice of Hungary’s rights in the EU. The petition was announced on Friday by Finnish MEP Petri Sarvamaa. The petition is based on the 7th article, which allows members to suspend membership for violations of values such as human rights, democracy, equality, and the rule of law. Sarvamaa explains that if one-third of the European Parliament members and the majority of the Council members agree, they can suspend the rights of a member, including their voice in the parliament.

Finnish MEP Petri Sarvamaa launched the petition this week, and it has already gathered 120 signatures, as mentioned on his microblog on Facebook. Hungary’s Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Orban has criticized the petition, stating that the EU is calling for the protection of its own rights and the adoption of decisions to safeguard EU values. Orban believes that this action would indicate that the EU doesn’t respect any restrictions on the rule of law or law violations, while the main focus should be on the security of the European economy and the protection of democracy and the rule of law.
