“Cyprus President Confirms Turkish Cypriot Activities Don’t Hinder Reunification Efforts Despite Trench Excavation”

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has reassured that the activities of Turkish Cypriots are not impeding the efforts towards reunification between the Greek and Turkish communities on the island. Christodoulides announced that Turkish military forces have recently commenced digging trenches near the village of Denia, located on the buffer zone along the Green Line. This action comes as a response to the stance taken by the main opposition party, the Movement for a Better Cyprus (MBC), and the European Union. “I have been made aware of the actions taken by the Turkish side. However, these activities do not hinder the progress towards reunification,” stated Christodoulides. He further informed that the MBC and the European Union had been apprised of the situation. “I have communicated with the head of the community’s administration and assured him that the Republic of Cyprus will provide all necessary means to ensure the safety of the residents in the buffer zone,” added the President. Christodoulides emphasized that although the actions of Turkish military forces do not violate the status quo and fall within their boundaries, they do often disturb the tranquility of the area, thereby causing tension. Just last week, Cyprus’ Defense Minister, Kolin Stavart, expressed his concern regarding the mounting tensions in the buffer zone.
