Investigations Underway in Connection with Turtle Corpse Pollution in Yerevan’s Artificial Lake

Investigations are currently underway to determine the connection between the turtle corpses found in the 4th section of the artificial lake and the nearby tannery. Yerevan’s Municipality Spokesperson, Mamuli Cardugaryan, shared this information on his Facebook page, although the purpose of these investigations has not been disclosed. The main significance of addressing the pollution caused by the turtle corpses in the artificial lake is to improve the city’s air quality, create a healthy microclimate, and provide a peaceful place for people to relax.

In the past decades, the park area surrounding the lake has experienced significant damage. Many trees were cut down in the 1990s, and in the 2000s, certain sections of the park were rented out, leading to the construction of illegal buildings and filling in of the lake’s shores. As a result, the green and recreational areas in the 4th section of the artificial lake have decreased, as well as the territory of the tannery. Over time, unauthorized and regular construction has taken place in the area, including the creation of poorly organized areas for tree planting and a chaotic waste system. These circumstances have made it impossible to preserve the natural resources of the lake’s ecosystem.

In order to restore the 4th section of the artificial lake and address the habitat of turtles, discussions are currently ongoing. The aim is to create organized paths and bridges that can accommodate turtles comfortably and establish a network for the movement of aquatic plants and fauna. Additionally, there are plans to revitalize water bodies, build sports grounds, and create facilities for customer service and turtle breeding. The goal is to provide scenic places for residents and organize interactive recreational programs, as well as musical and cultural events.

Investigations are also being carried out to determine the cause of the turtle deaths in the 4th section of the artificial lake. The preservation of historical and cultural monuments like the Chess House is also a priority. The authorities of Yerevan’s Municipality will release official statements and provide additional information on this topic in the near future.
