“President of Television and Radio Commission Suspends Radio Sputnik’s Subsidiary, Citing Fake News Concerns”

On January 5th, a meeting took place between Tigran Hakobyan, the President of the Television and Radio Commission, Kirill Vishinsky, the Chief Executive Officer of “Russia Segodnya” and the head editor of Radio Sputnik, and Andrey Blagodarenko, the deputy chief editor of Radio Sputnik. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the suspension of “TOSPA” radio, a subsidiary of Radio Sputnik, due to violations of the regulations set by the National Commission for the Protection of Freedom of Speech and Human Rights. Hakobyan emphasized that the Commission’s decision was both legal and necessary to prevent the spread of fake news and misinformation within Armenia. Additionally, Hakobyan informed the Russian partners that the actions of the Armenian-Russian military cooperation organization did not align with the spirit of their partnership. The Commission’s decision was relayed to the Russian side, highlighting that the subsidiary radio’s operation had not been officially disclosed by either Radio Sputnik or “Pyatnitsa s Tigranom Keosayanom.” Understanding the political significance of the regulatory body in terms of media freedom, Vishinsky withdrew the radio from their list of preferences. “Sputnik Armenia” will continue its editorial and operational activities based on the decision made by the Republic of Armenia and in alignment with the state’s interests.
