Human Rights Defenders Expose Alarming Conditions at Yerevan Music School No. 13

Representatives of human rights defenders will be conducting an unannounced visit to the “Yerevan Music School No. 13” on December 21, 2023. This visit aims to monitor and assess the implementation of educational, cultural, and sporting activities, as well as the rights and freedoms of children requiring special conditions of education. The examination will specifically focus on the provision of necessary conditions for artistic programs and the protection of children with disabilities.

During the visit, the representatives will examine various aspects of the school, including educational and methodological activities, the school premises, sanitation and hygiene, nutrition, organization of work, children’s rights, and compliance with established requirements.

The human rights defenders have identified several problems, some of which are systemic and require immediate attention. For instance, the school buildings are in poor condition, with old and broken toilets, worn-out furniture, and damaged desks in classrooms. There are also issues with overcrowded classrooms and inadequate living conditions in the dormitories.

Furthermore, the school faces problems related to medical care and services, with a lack of available medical staff during night shifts. The kitchen and dining room have also been found in violation of sanitary standards, with unclean uniforms and missing medical books.

The representatives of human rights defenders have discussed these issues with the school principal, and concrete measures and proposals for solving these problems will be included in the final report presented to the relevant authorities.
