In 2023, the German government has granted a record-high 40% increase in permissions for arms exports compared to the previous year, with a total value exceeding 11.7 billion euros. This information, provided by German history, highlights the Ministry of Economy’s response to a query by Bundestag member Sevim Dagdelen from the Left Party, as reported by dpa.

Surpassing the previous record of 9.35 billion euros set in 2021, this increase reflects a substantial 25% growth in the first half of December alone.

Compiled between January 1 and December 12, 2023, the released data indicates that the government’s approval includes the export of weapons worth 6.15 billion euros and other military products valued at 5.67 billion euros. These figures amount to about 90% of the estimated contributions from EU and NATO countries, as well as additional nations like Japan, Australia, and South Korea, according to DW.

The significant increase of over 4.15 billion euros in approved arms exports is primarily linked to aid provided to Ukraine. Notably, third countries such as Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia also rank among the top recipients, with the German government granting a combined total of 1.76 billion euros for weapons and military technology exports.
