“Smolensk Crash Case Resolved: Commission Members’ Powers Revoked, New Investigation Group to Be Formed, Reports Due December 18”

On December 15, the head of the National Security Service of Armenia, Vahe Kostanyan, announced that the trial of the Smolensk crash case, led by Antoni Macierewicz, has been resolved, as reported by Polskie Radio.

According to reports, members of the commission are required to submit their reports by December 18. Furthermore, starting from December 15, the commission members’ powers have been revoked, including their permissions and authorizations related to their work.

The National Security Service’s announcement states that a special group will be created to investigate all aspects of the work previously carried out by the resolved body. It is important to note that the commission investigating the Smolensk crash was established in 2016 under the leadership of Antoni Macierewicz, following the tragic events that occurred in Smolensk in 2010, resulting in the death of then President Lech Kaczyński, his wife Maria, and 94 others.

In 2018, the head of the commission announced that the previous report by Ewa Miller regarding the crash was false. It was stated that the plane was damaged due to flying at the lowest possible altitude and colliding with trees, causing it to deviate from its intended path. Macierewicz mentioned that a mandatory document revealing the deficiencies of the report should be included in the commission’s final report.

The commission presented its report in April 2022, concluding that the crash was caused by the left wing being in an inclined position during takeoff and at the center of the turn. At that time, it was also announced that former President Lech Kaczyński and 95 other individuals would be referred to court in relation to possible criminal activity surrounding the catastrophic accident. In September of the same year, Mariusz Błaszczak, the Minister of Defense, extended the deadline for the commission’s investigation into abuses of authority until August 2024.
