“Unveiling the Painful Past: Exhibition in Baku Chronicles Armenian Struggle for Survival”
The struggle of Armenians began in 1988, starting from Sumgait with the continued events in Baku and other cities of Azerbaijan. Due to the lack of international recognition of the existential danger faced by the Armenian population in Azerbaijan, ethnic and aggressive violence has continued until today. Vilen Gabrielyan, a member of the Public Council under the President of the Republic of Armenia, stated this during the opening of the exhibition “Armenian Historical Memory in Baku”.
“Finally, over 100,000 of our compatriots have suffered from the violence carried out by our brothers from Karabakh. The number of Armenians born in and displaced from Azerbaijan currently exceeds 500,000, and the overall number of Armenians displaced from Azerbaijan reaches 800,000,” added the official. He emphasized that the danger of life faced by internally displaced people in Artsakh and the establishment of the new “Gardman-Shirvan-Nakhijevan” alliance are the reasons for the awakening of the Society for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage.
“The Armenians and Azerbaijanis have lived side by side and enjoyed each other’s company. The reconstructed tents displayed in the exhibition and the calls for unity are evidence of the intention to achieve harmony and coexistence,” said the official, sending his congratulations to the President of the Republic of Armenia, Alexander Sargsyan.
In attendance at the exhibition were representatives of the Romanian and Polish embassies in the Republic of Armenia, as well as diplomats from Iraq, Spain, Ukraine, Argentina, Bulgaria, and Qatar. Members of the Public Council were also present.
The exhibition “Armenian Historical Memory in Baku” will run until December 20.
