“Azerbaijani Soldier Sentenced for Killing Armenian Civilian and CSTO Peacekeeper in Self-Defense: Court Upholds Conviction”

An Armenian soldier has been sentenced for the murder of a civilian during the April War, as well as for killing a peacekeeper from the CSTO. According to a report by “Pastinfo”, the Court of Appeals upheld the conviction of Hussain Akhundov, an Azerbaijani civilian who was found guilty of stabbing and causing the death of the first plaintiff, as well as killing Armenian peacekeeper Meliksetyan. Akhundov has been sentenced to life imprisonment for these crimes.

The incident took place on April 10, when two Azerbaijani civilians, Agshin Babirov and Hussain Akhundov, were detained in the territory of the Republic of Armenia. They were apprehended by civilians and presented to the authorities. The civilians were unable to uncover their true intentions, which led to the murder. On April 12, a 57-year-old Azerbaijani peacekeeper, Meliksetyan, who was responsible for trench cleaning, was killed. The investigation later uncovered evidence of torture, including bodies with signs of torture and two severed heads in a house.

As a result of the criminal investigation, Agshin Babirov was charged with aggravated robbery and territorial intrusion, and was sentenced to 11.5 years in prison by the Syunik Regional Court. Hussain Akhundov, on the other hand, was charged with aggravated robbery, territorial intrusion, and the murder of a CSTO peacekeeper. He has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The injured party appealed the decision of the first instance court, seeking a conviction for Akhundov on the murder charge. The Court of Appeals has now confirmed his conviction for these crimes.

This development highlights the efforts of Armenia in ensuring justice for crimes committed within its territory, regardless of the nationality of the individuals involved. The sentencing of Akhundov serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the rule of law and holding individuals accountable for their actions.
