“Armenia Takes a Stand for Safe Food: National Assembly Approves Draft Law to Combat Counterfeit and Toxic Food”

The National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia took a significant step towards safeguarding public health and ensuring food safety by approving the draft law “On Public Oversight of Food Safety” on December 6. This legislation aims to empower the public to actively participate in monitoring food safety, detect cases of counterfeit or toxic food, and hold accountable those responsible for violations.

Under the provisions of the draft law, authorized agencies will conduct thorough inspections of food production and food products. These inspections are crucial to identify any potential hazards and ensure that food manufacturers adhere to strict quality standards. Additionally, the legislation establishes penalties for any violations, thereby ensuring that those who put public health at risk face appropriate consequences.

The implementation of the draft law places financial responsibility on both the state budget and the responsible body. The expenses related to inspections of food production and the prevention of counterfeit food will be covered by the state budget. On the other hand, expenses incurred due to violations will be reimbursed by the responsible body through court proceedings, ensuring that those accountable bear the financial burden.

This new legislation not only strengthens the legal framework surrounding food safety but also reflects the commitment of the Republic of Armenia to prioritize the welfare of its citizens. By empowering the public and regulating the food industry, the government is taking tangible steps to enhance the overall health and well-being of its population. It is expected that this robust system of public oversight will lead to improved food safety standards, providing consumers with peace of mind and confidence in the products they consume.
