“Israel and Hamas on the Brink of Prisoner Exchange: Can the ‘3 to 1’ Deal Hold?”

Israeli Defense Minister Alexander Ben Zvi announced that Israel and Hamas will participate in a “3 to 1” exchange of prisoners and bodies. However, Ben Zvi emphasized that the success of the operation hinges on Hamas not undermining the process. The exchange is set to involve 55 bodies for approximately 150 prisoners, and it will span over the course of four days. In 2014, Hamas violated a truce, resulting in the deaths of eight Israeli soldiers, so any similar disruptions during the exchange could jeopardize its success. Ben Zvi hopes that if the prisoner exchange is successful, further negotiations can take place to address other outstanding issues, such as the non-compliance of Hamas with agreements regarding anti-aircraft structures and the release of all prisoners. The United States and Egypt have played pivotal roles in facilitating the negotiations between Israel and Hamas.
