Yerevan Authorities Give Approval to Close Memorial Plaques of Prominent Armenian Figures

Yerevan authorities have approved a project to close the memorial plaque of Alpik Mkrtchyan, an Armenian physicist, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor, and academician of NAS RA. The plaque is located on 20 Pushkin Street in Yerevan’s Hrachya Kocharyan Street. Born on February 16, 1937, in Tzaghkunk village of Gegharkunik region, Mkrtchyan completed his studies at Yerevan State University in 1959. Throughout his career, he held various influential positions, including heading the Department of Physics at Institutes affiliated with YSU and serving as the director of the branch of ESRIs. Mkrtchyan received several awards for his contributions, such as the Order of the Republic of Armenia and the gold medal of NAS RA.

The memorial plaque of Emile Grigoryan, former director of the Yerevan jewelry factory, will also be closed at 12 Bagratunyats Street, Arshakunyats Avenue. The decision, presented by Tigran Yeroyan, former head of the Yerevan jewelry factory, received the consent of the majority of residents. The expenses for closing the plaque will be covered by Yerevan jewelry factory Co. Ltd. Grigoryan, born in 1938 in Yerevan, started his professional journey as a technologist-designer at the Yerevan jewelry factory. He became the director of the factory in 1983 and played a crucial role in the establishment of the unified union of jewelers and jewelers of Armenia. Grigoryan was honored with the “Anania Shirakatsi” medal in 2002 and the 2nd degree medal “For Services to the Homeland” in 2011.

Another memorial plaque set to close is the one commemorating Ararat Sahakyan, a renowned construction builder and recipient of the title of Hero of Labor of Armenia. The plaque is located at 34A, Yerevan, with the consent of Avsharunyats Street residents. The initiative to close the plaque was presented by Sahakyan’s son, and the financial aspect will be covered by the family. Sahakyan’s notable contributions include his involvement in the construction of significant cultural and architectural buildings in Yerevan between 1970 and 2000. Some of the notable projects he worked on include the Karekin Demirchyan named Yerevan Metro, the Philharmonic Hall of Marzahamergi, and the Russia cinema theater of Yerevan.
