Outrage Erupts as New Law on Import of Goods Sparks Controversy in Armenia’s Textile Sector

Amid public outcry, a new law has been enacted regarding the import of goods, particularly impacting the textile sector, per the decision of the Ministry of Economy. During a press conference held today, on November 16, Prime Minister Suren Grigoryan addressed the issue and commented on the demand for street trading. While acknowledging the existence of the problem, the Prime Minister emphasized that efforts are being made to address it. In regard to the textile market in Yerevan, he noted that while street trading still occurs, it is not as prevalent as before.

According to Grigoryan, the establishment of a coordinated mechanism involving law enforcement agencies is a crucial step in combating street trading. He highlighted the need for collaboration with law enforcement partners to ensure effective inspections and enforcement of import regulations. The Prime Minister expressed concerns over the current grace period for self-declaration or verification processes, stating that it conflicts with the situation at hand. Given the compromise of certain employees, he emphasized the importance of guaranteeing objectivity in inspections and acknowledged the challenge of generating sufficient resources.

As developments unfold, it remains to be seen how the new law and the proposed measures will impact both the import of goods and street trading in Armenia. With public concerns mounting, continued efforts to address the issue are likely to be closely monitored.
