“European Parliament and Council Achieve Breakthrough Agreement on Natural Ecosystem Regulation”

Members of the European Parliament (EP) and the European Council representatives have reached an agreement on the regulation of natural ecosystems, as stated by the co-chairs of the relevant intergroup. The preliminary political agreement, reached on Wednesday evening, involved five delegations in the negotiations.

According to the statement on the European Council’s website, the EU presidency and representatives of the European Parliament have achieved a preliminary political agreement on the regulation of natural ecosystems. The proposed regulation aims to restore a minimum of 20% of the EU’s forests and seas by 2030 and all ecosystems requiring restoration by 2050, including rural areas, mountains, coasts, and urban ecosystems.

Ratification by both the European Parliament and the European Council is required for the agreement to take effect. Once ratified, the new regulation will be published in the Official Journal of the EU and will become enforceable 20 days after publication.

During the negotiations, concerns were raised by certain administrations regarding the perceived restrictiveness of the EU requirements. Additionally, some MEPs were accused of acting outside the agreed framework by portraying the plan as a threat to farmers.
