ICCROM Holds 33rd Session in Rome, Focuses on Preserving Cultural Heritage Amidst Ongoing Aggression

The 33rd session of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) took place in Rome from November 2-3. Representatives from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Armenia, along with Harutyun Vanyan, the Head of the Department of History and Culture of the State Service for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Armenia, and experts from the Department of Diplomatic Relations of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attended the session. One of the key topics discussed was the preservation of the cultural heritage of the Republic of Artsakh and the ongoing military aggression by Azerbaijan. The importance of safeguarding and restoring historical and cultural monuments was also emphasized.

The session shed light on the efforts made by international organizations and structures in ensuring the partial protection of Armenian historical and cultural heritage through collaborative initiatives. However, the lack of preservation of Armenian historical and cultural heritage in Nakhichevan was highlighted as a concerning situation.

The session delved into the actual damage caused by the vandalism and destruction of Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage, shedding light on the disregard for international law and regulations. Additionally, discussions centered around the links between international organizations and certain decisions made by Azerbaijan that have not been implemented.

The session also drew attention to Armenia’s participation in ICCROM’s study programs, specifically focusing on the “First Aid and Preparedness” program. The assessment of the number of endangered and limited historical monuments in Armenia was another topic of discussion.

The discussions on ongoing projects will continue in the near future. This session serves as an important platform for addressing the urgent need to protect and restore cultural heritage, while also highlighting the challenges faced in the process.
