“European Countries Work to Maintain Gas Supply from Russia via Ukraine Despite Expired Agreement: German Newspaper”

Despite the expiration of the gas transit agreement between Ukraine and Russia on December 31, 2024, several European countries are still working on the supply of Russian gas through Ukraine’s transit territory. The German government and the European Commission have been in negotiations with EU member states, such as Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, which receive gas from Russia through Ukraine. There is also a possibility that the European Union will enter into a gas transit agreement with Russia through Ukraine, according to a statement by a representative of the European Commission. Despite the conflict with Ukraine, Russia continues to supply gas to European countries, including Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. It has been reported that the EU member states will continue negotiations on the extension of the Russia-Ukraine gas transit agreement until 2025, with the possibility of European companies purchasing gas from Azerbaijan and using Russian pipelines for transportation. The head of the Russian gas company “Navtogaz,” Aleksey Chechnikov, is confident in finding a solution to the issues related to the operation of the Russian gas transport system through Ukraine. However, the energy minister of Ukraine, German Galushchenko, has stated that Kiev is not interested in signing any additional agreement or prolonging the gas transit agreement with Russia.
