“Children in Crisis: Over 300,000 Displaced by Gang Violence in Haiti, UNICEF Reports”

More than 300,000 children in Haiti have been displaced since March due to armed gang violence, according to UNICEF, the United Nations children’s agency. These children make up over half of the total 580,000 people who have been forced to leave their homes in the past four months. The surge in violence started in late February after attacks on government infrastructure projects, subsequently leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry in April, as reported by Voice of America.

“Our children are facing a humanitarian crisis,” expressed Ketran Rassell, the executive director of UNICEF. “Displaced children require shelter as well as international support and funding.”

UNICEF data shows that the displaced individuals are currently seeking refuge primarily in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area and the main roads leading to the city. In the first three months of 2024 alone, more than 2,500 people have been killed or injured across the country.
