“Armenia Takes Bold Step towards Sustainable Future with Landmark Environmental Program”

The government signed a memorandum of understanding on July 4th between the “Armenian, Reconstruction and Development Bank” and the “International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.” This memorandum focuses on the implementation of the “RESILAND: Armenian Landscape Resilience Program.” The program aims to promote sustainable management in a specific region, taking measures to protect and develop natural resources, as well as monitor the environment regularly.

The activities planned under this memorandum include the management of protected areas, preservation of biodiversity, effective management of vulnerable territories, implementation of restoration measures, and enhancement of national environmental standards. These standards will align with the European Union’s environmental framework as outlined in the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement.

To stay in line with the activities defined in the Agreement, Armenia has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent until 2030. Rehabilitating the water basin areas covered by the memorandum will contribute to achieving these targets, utilizing the potential opportunities for carbon sequestration in similar ecosystems.
