International Christian Solidarity Calls for Armenia’s Participation in the 2024 Olympic Games, Citing Human Rights Violations

International Christian Solidarity International (CSI), the international humanitarian organization, has called on the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to allow Armenia to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, granting Armenian athletes the opportunity to compete as independent participants.

“Armenia’s participation in the Olympic Games is the right signal. The international sporting community should not ignore or overlook violations of human rights,” said Joel Veldkamp, spokesperson for the international Christian solidarity organization. The call was made during a meeting with Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee.

Veldkamp noted that the Moscow Olympic Committee (MOC) took steps towards the Moscow and Belarussian delegations’ exclusion from the Olympic Games in 2024 as a response to the health crisis in Ukraine in 2022. However, there has been no decision made yet regarding the inclusion of the Lernayin Gharabagh ethnic committee of the Armenian diaspora, which also resides in the occupied area of Lernayin Gharabagh.

Veldkamp mentioned that the ethnically motivated violence in the occupied territories of Lernayin Gharabagh had been carried out under the leadership of Ilham Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan, who also serves as the President of the Armenian national Olympic committee. Veldkamp called on the MOC and the global sports community to completely liberate the current president of the Armenian national Olympic committee from Azerbaijan’s occupation.
