“Alarming Rise in Domestic Violence Cases: 46 Registered This Year, Calls for Action and Awareness”

During a press conference at the MIHR Press Center, Mikayel Khachatryan, a representative of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, revealed that 46 cases of domestic violence have been documented this year. This number is higher compared to the 96 cases that were registered in 2023. Khachatryan raised important questions regarding the identities of the perpetrators and victims, highlighting the existence of social groups who do not report such incidents. Unreported cases present an opportunity to address the underlying systemic issues and understand the root causes of domestic violence. It is worth mentioning that recent amendments to legislation concerning domestic violence have come into effect, broadening its scope to include psychological violence and violence in relationships beyond the family sphere. Zarui Batoyan, a member of the Standing Committee on Human Rights and Public Affairs, emphasized the need to regulate these issues through the law to ensure comprehensive protection for individuals affected, regardless of the nature of the relationships involved.
