“Gender Equality: Prime Minister Claims No Need to Increase Women in Government, Experts Disagree”

The problems of gender equality can only be effectively addressed in leadership, as leadership inherently implies inclusion. On July 1st, the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, attended the Third Forum of Armenian Government, wherein he expressed his view that increasing the number of women in the government is not necessary for achieving gender equality. However, many believe that significant changes are needed in this aspect. Currently, women comprise only 30 percent of the government representation, and increasing this percentage would bring about positive transformations. It is noteworthy that our government is one of the areas with relatively minimal discrimination in terms of gender representation, as women make up 50 percent of its composition, but we should strive for an even higher representation. There has been no credible evidence suggesting that women are incapable of performing tasks that men can. Another important aspect that requires attention is the external commitment to gender sensitivity. This implies that the change must start with ensuring gender parity in representation. There is still much work to be done in this regard,” stated Arman Grigoryan.
