Freedom House released a special report urging the International Criminal Court to take action against Azerbaijan for its actions in and around Artsakh since the 2020 war. The report, titled “Why are there no Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh?”, argues that these actions amount to ethnic cleansing and qualify as crimes against humanity and war crimes. The report highlights various violations of rights, including the right to life, health, freedom of movement, and cultural rights. Freedom House conducted an investigation that included interviews, satellite imagery, and statements from Azerbaijan’s officials to arrive at its conclusion. This report is significant as it marks one of the first times a major international organization has recognized Azerbaijan’s forcible displacement of Armenians in Artsakh as an act of ethnic cleansing.
