“French Voter Turnout Soars in Parliamentary Elections, Making Waves for Macron’s ‘En Marche'”

According to data from Ipsos Talan, the participation of French voters in yesterday’s parliamentary elections, which took place from 18:00 onwards, has been evaluated at 65.5%. This is slightly lower than the initial assessment of 67.5%, but still significantly higher than the participation seen in the 2022 elections, which stood at 47.5%. The high level of voter turnout, the highest since 1986, indicates that French voters are particularly concerned about the election results, as reported by French media.

It’s important to note that French voters also participated in the first phase of the parliamentary elections held last Sunday. This first phase can shape the national and progressive forces in France. The National Assembly, which is the main chamber of the French parliament, consists of 577 members. In the second phase of the elections, candidates are selected based on a majority of votes obtained in the first phase. In cases where no candidate meets the criteria, the second phase is carried out, and this is scheduled for July 7th. To participate in the second phase, candidates must collect at least 12.5% of the registered voters from the first phase.

Macron mentioned the importance of these elections when his movement, “En Marche,” faced difficulties in the European Parliament elections in June. Interviews suggest that “En Marche” is gathering support and has the potential to gain a significant majority in the parliamentary elections. However, considering the current unstable system, known as “cohabitation,” it remains uncertain how successful “En Marche” will be in sharing power.

Despite previously stating that he would not resign from his position before the end of his presidential term in 2027, Macron’s situation may be similar to that of his predecessors due to the “cohabitation,” as suggested by international media.
