“Discovery of Underground Tunnels in al-Nuri Mosque Exposes ISIS’s Secret Operations, YOUNESCO Announces”

The cultural activities of MAC’s YOUNESCO have led to the discovery of five underground tunnels in the al-Nuri Mosque complex in the historical al-Nuri district of Mosul, Iraq. These tunnels were used by the leaders of the “Islamic State” group to manage their territory, according to YOUNESCO’s announcement. The Institute of Archaeologists, during restoration work between 2017 and 2020, uncovered these tunnels which revealed hidden devices intended for destructive operations. The authorities in Iraq have been informed, and the territory has been secured, bringing the situation under control. YOUNESCO’s statement also mentions that one tunnel has been completely destroyed, and the remaining four will be systematically destroyed in the upcoming days. In response, the Iraqi authorities have requested YOUNESCO to halt all restoration work in the al-Nuri district to ensure the preservation of the entire complex. This is necessary as the devices found in the tunnels have not yet been rendered completely harmless. The al-Nuri Mosque is significant as it was where the head of MAC, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, declared an Islamic caliphate on June 29, 2014. Sadly, during the battle of Mosul in 2017, the mosque was blown up by militants.
