“30 Killed in Violent Crackdown: Kenyan Authorities Face Criticism for Opening Fire on Peaceful Demonstrators”

During the demonstrations in Kenya this week, 30 people have been killed. The protests were sparked by the government’s decision to raise taxes on their obligations management, according to a report by Human Rights Watch.

“The security forces in Kenya opened fire on the demonstrators on Thursday, June 25, 2024, as well as on those who tried to escape,” stated Human Rights Watch.

“The exact number of casualties in Nairobi and other cities is not confirmed, but Human Rights Watch has been informed that 30 people were killed on that day. This information was gathered from hospitals and mortuaries,” stated Human Rights Watch.

“They shot directly at the protesters with no justification, which is unacceptable from a constitutional and international human rights perspective,” said Otsieno Namwaya, the Africa director at Human Rights Watch.

“The authorities in Kenya must acknowledge the power of their forces and ensure the protection of journalists. We can no longer tolerate the impunity of the authorities,” he added.

Peaceful demonstrations took place in Kenya on Wednesday when the protesters learned about the decision to increase taxes on the national base of the Currency Commission.

Following this, the police dispersed the crowd and unrest erupted, marking an unprecedented event in the country’s history since gaining independence from Great Britain in 1963. In response, William Ruto’s administration, the head of state, called for an emergency meeting.
