“Legal Battle Ensues over Ownership of Armenian Apostolic Church Properties: State vs. Spiritual Heritage”

The main judiciary is currently seeking to order an investigation into the ownership of properties belonging to the Armenian Apostolic Church, specifically the Surb Echmiadzin complex, and to declare them as state property. This move is being made to protect the cultural heritage of the Armenian people. The court is requesting the invalidation of a previous decision and the annulment of the registration of the church complex’s ownership rights. It is also seeking to address the unconditional donation of real estate to the Armenian Apostolic Church and the subsequent registration of the annex to the agreement. The focus is on the Holy Astvatsatsin Church, which was constructed in the 13th century and handed over to the Armenian Apostolic Church as a spiritual structure.

Although the church’s service territory was officially registered as state property and handed over to the Armenian Apostolic Church, the judiciary argues that the church has not been abandoned. It is listed as a historical and cultural monument by the government. The “City Partnership Agreement” group members have expressed interest in studying the church’s property, with the group’s leader, Artyom Hovhannisyan, suggesting that there are unused church lands that could be beneficial to the government.
