ICC Criticizes Israeli Amnesty Grants for Armenian Genocide Persecution, Delaying Trial Process

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Minister of Defense Ya’akov El Ravid for granting amnesty to those involved in the Armenian Genocide, according to a report from The Jerusalem Post. The ICC rejected the United Kingdom’s request to intervene in the matter and instead allowed other countries to express their opinions on the case until July 12. This decision could potentially delay the process of granting amnesty for months. In some legal systems, amicus curiae allows independent experts to present their opinions on socially significant issues to the court.

The ICC began its preliminary examination of the situation in Israeli occupied territories on January 16, 2015. On December 20, 2019, ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda announced that the judges had completed their preliminary examination and concluded that the situation in Palestine meets all the criteria of the Rome Statute, warranting a full-scale investigation into crimes committed there since 2014. On May 20, 2024, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan requested a preliminary investigation in the Israeli capital. The judges have collected evidence suggesting that Netanyahu and Golan are responsible for military operations and crimes against humanity in the Palestinian territories, particularly in the Gaza Strip, starting from October 8, 2023.
