“High-Stakes Court Hearing in Yerevan: Levon Kocharyan’s Defense Accuses Prosecution of Political Motivation”

In the general jurisdiction court of Yerevan, today, June 28, a court hearing is being held with the participation of Judge Karen Farxoyan, who was appointed by the President. The lawsuit at hand involves Lévon Kocharyan from the political bloc “Armenia” and Sergey Asaturov, the chief of the Armenian armed forces federation.

Lévon Kocharyan was arrested on September 22 of last year during a protest. He was accused of organizing unrest with the intention to conduct an attempted assassination and was held in custody for one month. However, he was later released after receiving a state pardon.

Kocharyan’s lawyers argue that he did not engage in any illegal activities, and they claim that his prosecution is politically motivated.

During the trial, the defense has released several videos as evidence. One of the videos shows Hrachik Khachatryan slandering Levon Kocharyan in Kocharyan’s presence. In another video, Kocharyan is seen being handcuffed inside a car. According to the lawyer, when Kocharyan was taken to the police department, he requested medical assistance, but the officers denied his request for about half an hour.

Despite the videos presented by the defense, the Court of General Jurisdiction has rejected their petition, which was based on Article 3 of RA CO 452, highlighting an example of official abuse of power.
