“Breaking New Ground: Researchers Discover Game-Changing Approach to Enhance 3D Printing with Short Fiber Reinforcements”

A team of researchers at Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) has conducted a study that has the potential to revolutionize the field of 3D printing. Published in the journal Polymers, their laboratory work focused on analyzing the mechanical properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) composites by incorporating short fiber reinforcements such as glass, cotton, and basalt.

The study revealed that the addition of short fibers to ABS composites significantly enhances their mechanical properties. Specifically, using glass, cotton, and basalt fibers as reinforcements in 3D printed samples increased the tensile strength and flexural modulus by more than 1.7 and 1.5 times, respectively.

By utilizing larger-sized reinforcements in the form of fibers, the researchers observed an average 12.5% increase in mechanical strength. Additionally, employing electronic microscopy enabled them to gain better insights into the interaction between aramid and the polymer matrix, as well as the bonding among different types of short fibers.

These findings unlock new possibilities for enhancing 3D printing through advanced mechanical composites achieved by improved measurement techniques. Ultimately, this could pave the way for technological advancements aimed at boosting productivity in various industries.
