“Armenia’s EU Membership Bid Sparks Debate: Calls for Nationwide Referendum Ignored?”

The “Hraparak” newspaper reports that Armenia’s announcement of its intention to apply for membership in the European Union (EU) has sparked discussions among the organization’s founding members. Some individuals, including Arman Babajanyan, Aram Sarkisyan, Tigran Khzmalyan, Hovsep Khurshudyan, and others, are calling for a nationwide referendum to determine whether Armenia should seek EU membership. The opposition has raised this issue in the National Assembly, and the President of Armenia recently expressed Armenia’s desire to be part of the EU during his visit to Latvia. However, political analysts believe that a referendum is unlikely to take place, as it may contradict the ruling elite’s interests. Instead, the ruling party may exploit pro-European sentiments to gain support for their electoral goals. To hold a nationwide referendum, 50,000 signatures are required, and if the National Assembly rejects it, then 300,000 signatures are necessary.
