EBRD and Armenian Partners Join Forces for “Healthy Schools in Armenia” Program Expansion

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has partnered with the Municipality of Gyumri, the Institute of Public Health of the Ministry of Health (MPH), and “Eremyan Pharm” of the “Eremyan Projeqts” group to expand the “Healthy Schools in Armenia” program. The aim of the program is to improve the health and well-being of children and adolescents in Gyumri by promoting healthy eating practices, reducing the consumption of unhealthy foods and beverages, creating a demand for nutritious food, and encouraging healthier food choices.

The program was initially launched in December 2022 through a cooperation agreement between the MPH, the Municipality of Gyumri, and “Eremyan Projeqts.” Its pilot phase focused on promoting healthy eating practices and reducing the consumption of unhealthy snacks and beverages in schools. The program was implemented in the Shirak Province, specifically in the schools of Jermuk and Yeghegnadzor, benefiting a total of 411 students in grades 5-9. These students received a one-month supply of healthy snacks provided by “Eremyan Projeqts,” helping them start their journey towards healthier habits.

The EBRD, widely recognized for its investments in sustainable development and integration programs across its member countries, has joined forces with the initiative to support its expansion in Armenia. This collaboration will enable the “Healthy Schools in Armenia” program to reach more schools and students and provide them with access to healthy food options, contributing to the improvement of their eating habits.

“We are collaborating with the EBRD and ‘Eremyan Projeqts’ to expand our ‘Healthy Schools in Armenia’ program and ensure the widespread availability of healthy food, as well as the promotion of healthy eating habits among children in Armenia. We are delighted to receive support from the EBRD,” said Davit Eremyan, the CEO of “Eremyan Projeqts.”

For the past 18 years, the EBRD has been actively supporting investment projects in Armenia to promote economic development and integrate sustainable practices. Their contributions have focused on areas such as environmental improvement, energy efficiency, rural development, and technological advancements.

The “Healthy Schools in Armenia” program is a significant initiative led by the MPH of the Ministry of Health, aiming to enhance the living conditions and health of the population. By reducing the consumption and impact of unhealthy products, the program encourages the formation of healthy eating habits and aims to reduce non-communicable diseases.

An evaluation conducted by the MPH found positive outcomes from the program, including a decrease in the consumption of unhealthy snacks and beverages and an increased interest in healthy eating habits. Research involving children and parents in the region has also facilitated a better understanding of the program’s implementation process.

The support from the EBRD will enable the expansion of the “Healthy Schools in Armenia” program, providing more schools and students in Armenia with access to healthy food and contributing to the improvement of their eating habits.

As a leading company in Armenia, “Eremyan Projeqts” specializes in agricultural production, hospitality, rural tourism, and educational and scientific activities.

The program will continue its activities in the Shirak Province, setting a precedent for the further development of healthy eating habits and the promotion of nutritional education in schools throughout Armenia.

The EBRD is an international financial institution that supports investment for sustainable development in its member countries. It has been instrumental in supporting initiatives that preserve and expand environmental connections, integrating them into investment projects in Armenia. With $7 billion in capital for integrative financing, the EBRD’s main office is located in London, UK.
