“Yerevan Mayor Faces Criticism Over Neglected Road Repairs: Is it Neglect or Intentional Delay?”

Last month, I addressed the issue of potholes on the Nork-Marash to Masiv road. Surprisingly, just a week later, a fresh layer of asphalt was applied. However, my disappointment grew as cracks reappeared on the road. I couldn’t help but wonder if there was some intentional effort to prevent public repair work. During the National Progress party’s meeting on June 25, the mayor of Yerevan, Tigran Avinyan, announced the appointment of Pedro Zarukyan as a member of the “National Development” group. In response, Zarukyan expressed his concerns about neglect and unfinished projects, citing a similar problem on Armenuhi Street two years ago.

I had submitted a complaint regarding the issue on Armenuhi Street, and it was eventually resolved. It is baffling to see that the same location is still problematic, despite numerous mentions by the public. Zarukyan questioned why the authorities were unable to solve a problem that could be resolved with just 5-6 complaints. Avinyan defended the city’s paving work, stating that they abide by regulations and perform necessary road cutting. However, he admitted that repairs were not initiated in areas where they were urgently needed.

Zarukyan accused Avinyan of disregarding the public’s concerns and prioritizing medium repairs and major renovations over minor repairs. He urged the mayor to fix the roads promptly, as people are inconvenienced and time is wasted. Zarukyan specifically mentioned the delayed completion of David Bek Street, which had been closed off for a month after being paved. Avinyan argued that evaluating people’s time should also involve considering the investment made in road repairs. He assured that efforts were being made to resolve the ongoing issues, emphasizing the complexity of construction work and the necessary repairs that cannot be postponed for 7-8 more years. Avinyan expressed the intention to prioritize repairs in the most critical areas within the next 1-2 years, without initiating full-scale renovations.
