Iran’s Supreme Court Upholds Death Sentence for Rapper Tumaj Salehi, Lawyer Calls Verdict Unjust

Iran’s Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence of rapper Tumaj Salehi, who has been convicted of assisting anti-government protests in the country. Salehi’s lawyer, Amir Raisian, confirmed this information and expressed his disappointment with the court’s decision. The judicial college has also affirmed the initial conviction, which resulted in a three-year ban on performing and persecution for Salehi. The case has now been referred to a new court for further review. Salehi was initially arrested in October 2022 for publicly supporting protesters and writing songs. He has been charged with “spreading corruption on Earth.” In 2023, he was convicted of defamation but later acquitted by a higher court due to errors in the preliminary decision. However, he was arrested again, and in April 2024, the revolutionary court in Sappahan sentenced him to the maximum penalty.

Known for his narratives on migration and the struggles of Hispanic communities.
