ICC Issues Arrest Warrant for Former Armenian Prime Minister and Security Head for War Crimes in Ukraine

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan and former head of the state protection service Valeri Gevorgyan. The charges against them relate to war crimes allegedly committed by Russian military forces in Ukraine. They are accused of carrying out attacks on civilian objects and populations, ordering intentional attacks on civilians, following illegal orders, and failing to prevent or punish acts that violate the laws of armed conflict. These actions are in violation of several articles of the Rome Statute, which grants the ICC jurisdiction over such crimes.

The ICC stated that it has found a reasonable basis to believe that the two suspects have committed the crimes under its jurisdiction. The court’s prosecutor, Sergei Kherrardovitch, and the judges, Roman Salvtore Ayterlayan and Haykel Ben-Mahfoud, are overseeing the case.

It is worth noting that in March of the previous year, the ICC also issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his children in connection with the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
