“Flooding Crisis Strikes Yerevan: Millions Wasted on Sewage System Failure”

In 2023, the budget for the construction of Yerevan’s sewerage and communal networks increased significantly compared to the previous year. However, delays in the implementation of the sewerage system led to flooding in several parts of the city, causing damage to properties and vehicles. A member of the “Mother Armenia” group raised concerns about the failure of the sewerage system and demanded an explanation for the millions of dollars spent on it. The mayor’s spokesperson clarified that the funds allocated for the “sewage system” were actually used for a drinking water supply system and emphasized the need for upgrades to the existing sewerage system. A small-scale reconstruction project was carried out, but major projects in this field have not been implemented in recent years.

One area particularly affected by the insufficient capacity of the existing sewage networks is the vicinity of the Agricultural University. The mayor’s spokesperson highlighted the interconnection between the sewerage system and the wastewater treatment plant, which could potentially increase the capacity of the networks and improve drainage. The municipality is currently discussing the possibility of renegotiating with the contracted company to redirect fees for the use of municipal infrastructure towards development projects. This approach has been successful in other countries, such as the United States. However, it is important to note that such a method has not been implemented under similar circumstances in any other country.
