“Soldiers Withdraw from Demilitarized Zone as Tensions Rise: Third Incident Raises Concerns”

The soldiers of South Korea temporarily withdrew from the demarcation line of the demilitarized zone with North Korea on June 20, as confirmed by Yonhap News Agency, citing the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The withdrawal took place around 11:00 local time, and the North Korean side responded with retaliatory actions, considering it a border violation. However, Seoul has stated that it does not believe the violation was intentional. This incident marks the third of its kind in the past month, preceded by similar events on June 8 and 18. Initially, only a portion of the South Korean soldiers were armed with batons and shields, while others were unarmed. Starting from April, South Korea has been sending soldiers to construct landmarks that commemorate the demarcation line and to perform maintenance work on the roads in the border areas.
