Minister of Economy Visits Carpet Village, Highlights Potential of Local Workforce in Armenia

On June 21, Minister of Economy, Gegorg Papoyan, paid a visit to the Carpet Village in the Ararat region. This visit was announced on the Ministry’s Facebook page. Joining the minister were Mehdi Sahbanyan, Deputy Director of IIHS and head of the Financial and Economic Committee; Narek Ter-Yan, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Economy; David Khudatyan, Governor of the Ararat region; and Vardan Konstantian, representative of the Armenian trading partner in Iran.

During the meeting, the minister took the time to familiarize himself with the workshop’s activities and learn about their production capabilities, ongoing work, and future projects. The workshop’s construction began in 2021, with plans for production to commence in 2023.

The workshop in question leverages the potential of Armenia’s local workforce. In its initial phase, it has received a $5 million investment, which allows for the daily production of 60 tons of carpet. Its aim is to utilize the country’s resources for carpet production. In the second phase, an investment of over $7 million is planned, which will enable the production of looms and carpet accessories. It is estimated that the workshop will employ 200,000 workers and craftsmen annually.

Currently, the workshop employs 170 individuals, with 40 of them being from Iran and the remaining 130 from Armenia. Going forward, it is expected that the workforce will grow to approximately 250.
