“Nikol Pashinyan Calls for Changes in Armenia-Diaspora Relations: Aiming for Open and Inclusive Discussions”

Currently, Armenia is undergoing significant political changes that are having a profound impact on society and individuals’ psychological well-being. These changes are not limited to the domestic sphere but also extend to the Diaspora. During a meeting on June 19th with participants of the “iGov” program, which trains specialists in public administration, the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, stressed the importance of accurately documenting and acknowledging the evolving reality. He emphasized that the central focus should be on the Armenian people’s statehood and the sovereignty of Armenia. It is crucial to note that these social and psychological changes are not targeting specific individuals or groups but are meant to impact everyone, including the Prime Minister himself.

Pashinyan highlighted the historical recognition of the Diaspora as a vital institution within the Armenian government during the third republic. However, he stated that ongoing changes imply that the Diaspora cannot function as a separate entity but should be integrated into the mechanisms of the Republic of Armenia. This integration involves clarifying the specific roles and responsibilities of those involved in managing this mechanism, ensuring it has a solid legal and non-legal foundation. Pashinyan emphasized that the Republic of Armenia should be seen as a means of effectively managing the Diaspora.

Introducing changes to the Armenia-Diaspora relations is also essential. Pashinyan expressed the belief that discussions regarding what changes should occur need to be open and inclusive. Moving forward, it is crucial to consider both the functioning and non-functioning aspects of the Republic of Armenia’s mechanism for managing the Diaspora. By deviating from its established framework, the system becomes more susceptible, making it necessary to adapt and protect it. These discussions should involve all stakeholders and aim to foster a better understanding of the intended changes.
