Turkey Takes Aim at Chinese Car Imports: Imposes 40% Tariffs to Level the Playing Field

Turkey has announced new restrictions on the import of ready-made cars from China. Starting in July, the country plans to raise customs duties on Chinese car imports by 40%. As a result, the cost of a single car will be at least $7000, according to Bloomberg.

Chinese products have been steadily gaining popularity in the Turkish automotive market in recent years. From January to April 2024, a total of 29,539 new vehicles from China were sold in Turkey, accounting for 7.8% of the overall automotive market, as reported by Drom.

Chery, a Chinese car manufacturer, has particularly strong positions in the Turkish market. In the first four months of this year alone, the company sold 20,782 cars in Turkey.
