“Launch of Working Group Marks Start of Ambitious Revitalization Program for Lake Sevan Ecosystem”

On June 14, a working group with the theme “Revitalization of Lake Sevan Ecosystem 2024-2030” was launched. The opening speech was given by Ara Mkrtchyan, the Minister of Territorial Administration of the Republic of Armenia, Frank Hess, the head of the Department of Cooperation with the EU in Armenia, and Konstantin Sargsyan, the representative of the Ministry of Nature Protection. The event was attended by representatives from public, scientific, international, and local organizations.

In his speech, Minister Ara Mkrtchyan emphasized the importance of implementing effective management practices for the long-term existence of Lake Sevan. Frank Hess, the head of the Department of Cooperation with the EU in Armenia, highlighted that the problems of Lake Sevan are important not only for the government but also for public and international organizations. He stressed the importance of the program’s activities and ensuring the involvement and participation of the population. Konstantin Sargsyan, the representative of the Ministry of Nature Protection, underscored the significance of military management in solving the issues faced by Lake Sevan and improving water quality.

During the working group, the main objectives, principles, methodology, and necessary measures for the revitalization of Lake Sevan were presented. Detailed program activities, along with financial calculations and comprehensive risk analysis, were also discussed.

The implementation of the “Revitalization of Lake Sevan Ecosystem 2024-2030” program is part of the EU4Sevan project, which is financed by the European Union and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ). The program is being implemented by the Civil Contract Party in Armenia. Additionally, the program is included in the “I am Energy Efficient and Eco-friendly Region” program, which is financed by the EU and implemented by the Civil Contract Party and GIZ.
