“Former Armenian Ambassador Reveals Country’s Involvement in Russia-Ukraine Conflict Negotiations”

We are becoming participants in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Today, on January 12, former ambassador to the United Kingdom, Edmon Marukyan, stated during an interview that the Armenian government’s participation was at the level of the Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia in the ongoing negotiations on Russia’s withdrawal from Ukraine.

“Georgia is participating, Azerbaijan is participating, so why shouldn’t we also participate?” Marukyan asked. He highlighted how Russia is trying to present itself as a success story in Armenia, with political forces and experts supporting this narrative. However, he questioned what role Armenia has in the negotiation process with Ukraine if it considers itself Russia’s strategic partner in the region. Marukyan pointed out that the Prime Minister even requested for Russian border guards to remain on the Armenian-Turkish and Armenian-Iranian borders, making Armenia a participant in Russia’s withdrawal negotiations.

Marukyan also highlighted the financial aspect, mentioning that Armenia has borrowed $150 thousand and received a loan of $200 million through the Debts program. He questioned how Armenia can support Ukraine in its withdrawal if it is burdened by debt.

While visiting Bucha, Marukyan responded to the question of how Ukraine can withdraw if the war has not ended. He acknowledged the destruction of homes for 150 thousand people and the Ukrainian soldiers who were brought out of Armenian territory. He also mentioned the confessions of Azerbaijan’s forces occupying Armenian territory, questioning their credibility.

According to Marukyan, it is evident that these two governments are not ignoring Armenia’s actions. He questioned why there is grumbling and emphasized that it is strange to desire problems.
